As we are all frantically cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, faucet handles, light switches, and phones to ward off COVID-19, your floors should become part of your routine as germs can also be tracked into your house via your shoes.

How do you Disinfect Hardwood Floors?

Did you know that hardwood flooring is a healthy choice? It's naturally great for indoor air quality because it has no grout lines, fibers, or embossing that can trap bacteria, dust, pollen, animal dander, allergens, and, more importantly, microorganisms.

Before you get out the mop bucket, bleach, disinfectant sprays, or other non-wood products that you think will sterilize your hardwood flooring; please continue reading.

Routine Cleaning is all you need!

Sweeping or even vacuuming your hardwood floors about once per week and using a damp mop with cleaning products designed specifically for wood flooring every month will keep your floors clean and germ-free.

Did you know that many wood floor cleaning products have ingredients such as isopropyl alcohol that have disinfecting properties in them?

Using the appropriate cleaning products and, more importantly, using them as recommended by the manufacturer will ensure both ensure longevity and help you avoid damaging the wood finish.

Excessive Water is Woods Worst Enemy

As we all know, water and wood aren't friends, and that includes excessive cleaning solutions. Excessive moisture can rot, weaken, and cause mold to grow over time.

When mopping, the mop should be slightly moistened and wrung out well to keep the amount of moisture on the wood floor to a minimum. When using a spray mop, be sure to invest in a high-quality mop. They provide greater control over the amount of solution that's applied and come with disposable, super-absorbent, or washable pads to remove the cleaning solution and soil from the surface of the floor.

Also, steer clear of steam mops. Steam is simply the vapor form of water. Steam can travel deeper and faster in between cracks and into the cells of the wood. Repeatedly using a steam mop can permanently damage the wood floors finish.

Remove your Shoes!

Last but not least, removing your shoes before entering your house will decrease the potential of tracking germs inside your home.
