Wood Flooring 101

Hardwood Flooring Close UpBefore you begin shopping for wood flooring, there is some general knowledge we like to call “Wood Flooring 101” that may help you make a selection. There are so many types of wood flooring in the marketplace today – rustic, hand scraped, traditional, and exotic.  What is true about all wood floors is that they are a lifelong product that is durable, eco-friendly and beautiful.

Wood floors add value to your home at resale time, because they increase in value as your home does. Hardwood floor products are some of the most sought after hard surface flooring in remodeling and new construction.

Maintenance consists of simple sweeping, vacuuming, and protecting your floors from moisture and heavy wear. Preventive maintenance like area rugs, floor protectors (on all furniture) and routine use of recommended hardwood floor cleaner can prolong the beauty of your floors. Using improper cleaning products can result in additional wear, may void your warranty and cause problems when recoating.

Unlike most floor coverings, wood floors come from a natural resource that is sustainable. Long gone are the days when timber was cut down with little thought for the long term consequences on the nation's forests. Today most timber is cut from forests that are carefully managed to ensure continued resources in the future. In fact, according to U.S. Forest Service statistics, almost twice as much hardwood timber is added every year through new growth as is harvested. Additionally, there is more standing hardwood timber today than there was 50 years ago.

Another interesting fact is that wood floors help contribute to a healthy indoor living environment. Hardwood floors do not harbor dust mites or molds, which is especially beneficial for the estimated 35 million Americans who suffer from allergies. Pesticides tracked in from the outdoors and other toxins will not accumulate on the hard surface of wood floors, and there is no off-gassing of toxins that results from some synthetic materials like carpet. Some of these chemicals can make people in the home chronically ill.

Many of our customers have questions about solid vs. engineered wood floors. Engineered wood flooring is made of a core of hardwood or plywood with a layer of hardwood on the top. It versatile and durable and can be installed in multiple areas of the home, even those that may be subjected to moisture. Both solid and engineered wood flooring can be refinished.
