Old Walking Paths Transformed with Trex Decking

AZ Center in Phoenix, AZ, contacted us asking for recommendations on how to make their old walking paths and stage look new again. The walking paths and stage were built out of Redwood. Since they were installed outdoors they are continually exposed to the elements and heavy foot traffic causing them to become dried out.
 
The heartbeat of downtown Phoenix, after careful inspection, we determined that recoating the Redwood walking path and stage would be an ongoing process due to the dry arid climate as the wood dries out very quickly with the sun that we get. We concluded that recoating would need to be done every six months.

Maintenance Free Composite Material

Rather than continually recoating, our cost-effective solution was Trex decking. Unlike wood, Trex Decking is a composite material that won’t rot, warp, splinter, or fade. 

Perfect for high traffic areas, Trex decking is maintenance-free minus the occasional cleaning with soap and water to remove dirt and debris. No matter what Mother Nature throws at it, the composite decking is durable and long-lasting.

Installing the Decking

Most of the work to prep the decking for the walking path was done at our shop, where we fabricated the panels. Once prepped, we removed the old panels and replaced them with the new decking.


We were able to update the stage on site. The update consisted of the removal of every other plank that was on the platform. Once the planks were removed, we placed a weather proving membrane over the wood planks and anchored the Trex decking to the existing structure. By removing every other plank, we created a more structurally stable stage platform.



With the addition of the Trex decking, AZ center will be able to use the stage for their events for many years to come.
